Do birds prefer a Certain bird food? Introduction: I wanted to know if birds that come to my bird feeders prefer the food that they already have been eating, or something new, or treat them the same. I also wanted to know if they had an opinion on the bird seed they are eating already. Question: Do birds prefer a certain bird food that they have been eating, or will they like a new kind, or treat them the same? Hypothesis: I think they will like the kind they already have more because they will expect to have that food. Research: Birds favorite things are black oil sunflower seeds, Hulled Sunflower Seeds, Safflower, Nyjer, Striped Sunflower, Kernel Corn, Peanut, Millet, and Suet. The one that has the most of these things is the Pennington’s wild bird feed. I think they will like the Pennington’s wild bird feed more because they like black oil sunflower seeds the most in the past. Cardinals, and finches like black oil sunflower seeds, and those birds come to the bird feeders a lot . Variables: The independent variable is the bird feeder. The dependent variable is how much bird food was eaten by the birds. The control variables are what to do if it rains to do it again, or if something gets moldy to do it again, and fix it.
Methods, and Materials:
I filled two bird feeders with four cups of different bird seed in each bird feeder, and I put them back up on the posts. After four days they ate all of the cups, and of the Pennington’s wild bird feed. After four days they ate 2 cups of the Nature’s Song natural no waste bird seed birdseed. Next I decided to switch the bird feeders locations for the next Days. After four days they ate all of the cups, and of the birdseed they normally have. After four days they ate 2 cups of the Nature’s Song natural no waste bird seed birdseed. Next I decided to have fill both bird feeders with the Nature’s Song natural no waste bird seed bird food It took them 9 days to eat it. They both were empty on the same day.
This is the one they normally have in the bird feeders. It contains white proso millets, milo, wheat, sunflower seeds, calcium carbonate, vitamin A supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, potassium iodide, and vegetable oil. It is called Pennington’s wild bird feed.
This is the new bird seed. It contains sunflower chips, peanut pieces, grain products, and millet. It is called Nature’s Song natural no waste bird seed. Results and Graphs: The same locations, and the switched ones graph (Both of them Food, and Location):
It went as I thought they did not eat the new kind at all one day they ate almost none of it. This graph is the the first time, and the swiched both diffent kinds. They ate it, but there must be some kinds of birds that like it. It think the same kind has more things that every bird likes. They ate the normal kind quickly in only 4 days both times, but they did not like the new kind. I think it looked kind of weird so the bird probably did too, and did not recognize it. Only Nature’s Song natural no waste bird seed graph (Both Locations):
They ate in the same amount, and same time of food in both locations. This was the new kind of bird seed I put it in both locations. It took them 9 days to eat this food I do not think they like it very much. Some days they did not eat any of this bird seed. Some days they would eat of it some, but this is not a bird food I think all birds like because not a lot of it was eaten. Discussion:
Everything worked well except the Fact that It rained some times, but that did not really affect the experiment the birds continued eating the bird food. One time the bird food got mold on it from so much rain, but that was at the end of the project so it didn’t really matter. The Nature’s Song natural no waste bird seed has more food in it because it does not have shells in it, it is also heavier. My hypothesis was supported the birds preferred the bird feed that they had been eating. I think it is because it has more things in it that most birds here like. Some of the kinds of birds that are coming to my bird feeders are the Cardinal, Carolina Wren, Nuthatch, Robins, Eastern Blue Birds, Blue Jay, Gold Finch, and Carolina Chickadee. Bibliography:
